Advanced Vision Inspection for Surface & Edge Integrity
Industry: Automotive & Industrial ComponentsApplication: Machined / Forged Component Surface InspectionTechnology: 2D Vision + Controlled Illumination + Vision AI
Detecting Small Defects on Complex Metal Surfaces
Machined and forged components can develop surface and edge defects that are difficult to detect consistently through conventional visual inspection. Metallic reflections, varying surface finishes, complex geometries and small defect sizes can make defects appear differently under changing lighting and viewing conditions.
The inspection system needed to identify critical defects such as surface marks, scratches, dents, burrs, edge damage and machining abnormalities, while maintaining consistent detection across different component variants.
Intelligent 2D Vision for Surface & Edge Inspection
IdentifYou implemented a high-resolution 2D vision system with controlled illumination and Vision AI to capture and analyze critical surface and edge regions.
High-Resolution 2D Vision — Defect Detection
The high-resolution camera system captures detailed images of critical component surfaces and edges, enabling the inspection system to identify defects such as scratches, dents, burrs, edge damage, machining marks and other surface abnormalities. Where complex component geometry creates blind spots, multiple camera views and inspection angles are used to provide comprehensive coverage of critical surfaces and edges that cannot be reliably inspected from a single viewpoint.
Controlled Lighting — Making Defects Visible
Because machined metal surfaces can produce significant glare and reflections, illumination becomes a critical part of the inspection system.
Optimized diffused / directional lighting enhances defect contrast while reducing unwanted reflections, shadows and background variations.
This helps expose subtle surface abnormalities that may otherwise blend into the component surface.
Vision AI — Distinguishing Defects from Surface Variation
Vision AI analyzes the captured images to distinguish actual manufacturing defects from normal variations in surface texture, machining patterns and component appearance.
The inspection logic evaluates the relevant surface regions and generates an automated:
PASS / FAIL Decision
BUILT FOR PRODUCTION VARIABILITY
The inspection system is designed to accommodate variations across component variants, including differences in surface finish, component geometry, critical inspection areas and defect acceptance criteria. A recipe-driven inspection architecture enables the appropriate camera views, inspection parameters and defect thresholds to be configured for each variant, ensuring consistent surface and edge inspection as the product mix evolves.
